There’s also 60mg of D-mannose and 50mg of cranberry fruit powder, which may help prevent bacteria from adhering to the urinary tract walls, thus reducing the risk of urinary tract infections (UTIs). 

    What I Liked

    What I Didn't Like 


    • 50 billion CFU is a larger dose than most people need
    • Some users experienced gas and bloating when starting supplementation

Temporary side effects like gas and bloating are relatively common, possibly due to the capsule’s high CFU count.

    Although many probiotic supplements also feature prebiotics, Ritual Synbiotic+ takes this further by combining probiotics, prebiotics, and postbiotics in a single synbiotic capsule designed to bolster digestive health. 

    Totaling 11 billion CFU, the probiotics are provided by two well-known strains: Bifidobacterium lactis (BB-12) and Lactobacillus rhamnosus (LGG), the latter of which is recognized for its role in inhibiting the growth of pathogens in the vagina. Ritual Synbiotic+ also contains a prebiotic bacteriophage blend to target harmful gut bacteria. 

    The Supplement Facts are rounded out by a third component to support gut health: 300mg of Tributyrin, a source of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). Considered postbiotics, SCFAs are an important energy source for the cells that line the colon and support normal gut barrier function. Typically, they are produced via selective fermentation of prebiotics and fiber by “good” bacteria in the digestive tract.

    Although the alleged benefits of postbiotics are an emerging area of study, Ritual has invested in research to demonstrate the efficacy of Synbiotic+. A June 2022 study (sponsored by the manufacturer) found that Ritual’s combination of pre-, pro-, and postbiotics was effective at improving in vitro gut barrier function. 

    What I Liked

    What I Didn't Like 


    • Not all customers enjoy the strong minty taste of the capsule
    • Postbiotics may not be necessary if you already consume prebiotics and probiotics
    • Not designed to provide specific support for urinary tract health
    • Much more expensive than traditional probiotic products, even with a subscription

    Bottom Line: Ritual Synbiotic+ takes an innovative approach to gut health with its unique capsule design and combination of prebiotics, probiotics, and postbiotics. Though not specifically a women’s health supplement, it may promote healthy vaginal microbiota. Unfortunately, the price tag is prohibitively expensive for many customers, and its most unique component (300mg of postbiotics) may not be necessary if you already consume prebiotics and probiotics. 

    5. RenewLife Ultimate Flora Women's Care Probiotic Gummies

    Capsules, pills, and powders aren’t everyone’s cup of tea, which is where gummies come in. Although I don’t love the added sugar, I’m broadly supportive of making dietary supplements more accessible. RenewLife Ultimate Flora Women's Care Probiotic Gummies are a budget-friendly option for women looking to keep their immune system and gut healthy with a relatively low-dose probiotic, with a few added extras. 

    RenewLife gummies feature 2 billion CFU of probiotics (B. coagulans and B. subtilis), which may help modulate the gut microbiome and provide protection from certain pathogens. These cherry-flavored gummies also contain 500 mg of cranberry fruit powder, intended to reduce the risk of recurrent UTIs, and an unspecified amount of inulin from chicory root to “feed” the microbiome.

    What I Liked 


    • B. coagulans and B. subtilis to support digestion and immunity 
    • Potency of live and active cultures guaranteed through the expiration date
    • Includes 500mg of cranberry fruit powder, which includes proanthocyanidins (PACs)

    What I Didn't Like 


    • 2 billion CFU of probiotics may not be potent enough for noticeable results
    • Does not contain Lactobacillus or Bifidobacterium
    • 3g of sugar per serving
    • Contains several fillers and additives, like carnauba wax and corn starch
    • $50 minimum order (or a subscription) required for free shipping

    Bottom Line: While I’d prefer fewer additives and a different sweetener, RenewLife Ultimate Flora Women's Care Probiotic Gummies are a good starting place for women looking to improve their digestive and urinary health with an all-purpose probiotic supplement that also features prebiotics and cranberry extract. Though they lack the potency of higher-CFU probiotics and aren’t specifically formulated for vaginal balance, these gummies are a budget-conscious choice with generally positive customer reviews.

    How I Evaluated Each Probiotic

    The products discussed here represent a tiny fraction of the probiotics market. To select and rank the supplements in this article, I evaluated them on quality, formula, price, and reviews.   

    Quality 

    Before taking a probiotic or any other supplement, it’s important to ensure that the manufacturer adheres to strict quality and safety standards. That’s why I seek out supplements made in facilities with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) certification. 

    I also look for products that have been third-party tested. This guarantees that the supplement has undergone quality control and will deliver what’s promised on the Supplement Facts, including the number and viability of live microorganisms. 

    Formula 

    Considering the wide range of bacterial strains available, it’s no surprise that each probiotic supplement has a unique formula. Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium are the most common genera, but you’ll also find Saccharomyces, Enterococcus, Escherichia, and many others. Although single-strain probiotics may be beneficial, the best products typically contain several well-known strains, which work synergistically to inhibit pathogens, improve intestinal barrier function, and help modulate the immune system. 

    Ideally, women’s health probiotics should contain specific strains like Lactobacillus acidophilus or Lactobacillus rhamnosus that have been thoroughly researched for their effects on vaginal balance and pH levels.  

    Although the scientific community has not reached a consensus about the “ideal” number of colony-forming units (CFU) in a probiotic supplement, many experts recommend between 1 and 10 billion viable bacteria.     To evaluate probiotic supplements, I considered not just the strains and CFU, but also whether the supplements contain other health-supporting ingredients, including prebiotics, digestive enzymes, and fiber. Lastly, I looked at the source of the probiotics, as dairy-free probiotics are necessary for individuals with dietary restrictions, lactose intolerance, allergies, or other food sensitivities.
